What we know, what we don't, and what's still just rumor.
GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Seven months out from release, Rockstar still hasn't said anything official about Roleplay — no native support, no private servers, no dedicated modding tools. Everything being said right now about "RP on GTA 6" is a projection built from indirect signals.
The strongest signal remains Rockstar's August 2023 acquisition of Cfx.re — the company behind FiveM and RedM. The deal formally integrated a multiplayer modding team that had long been tolerated but never endorsed. Rockstar has stayed silent since on the future of FiveM beyond GTA V.
In parallel, Take-Two has confirmed across several earnings calls that a successor to GTA Online is in development alongside GTA VI. No name, no window, no business model. The RP community is therefore navigating between leaks, insider speculation and trailer analysis.
Since mid-2025, parts of the gaming press and the modding scene have been talking about "Project ROME" — short for Rockstar Online Modding Engine. The name appears in no official statement from Rockstar or Take-Two. It's a hypothesis that bundles several signals together to explain Rockstar's silence on RP. Read it as a plausible thesis, not a roadmap.
The dominant theory describes a first-party modding and multiplayer platform, natively integrated into GTA VI, designed to replace or absorb FiveM and RedM. Features mentioned by insiders include: an official modding SDK, visual scripting (gameplay logic without code), map and game-mode editors, persistent self-hosted or cloud servers, a storefront with creator monetization, and built-in moderation and anti-cheat tooling. In short: a first-party answer to the needs FiveM currently covers on GTA V — but backed by Rockstar.
None of the sources is Rockstar. The signal comes from three channels:
The Cfx.re acquisition (August 2023)
Most tangible signal. Rockstar formally purchased the company behind FiveM and RedM. It's the only public, verifiable element suggesting structural interest in multiplayer modding.
Insider leaks and gaming press
Articles published between mid-2025 and early 2026 on VertexMods, GTABase, RockstarINTEL, LADbible, Vice. These pieces rely on insiders (Tez2, Rockstar Mag) and on Rockstar job listings mentioning "online tooling" and "UGC platform" profiles.
Rockstar x RP scene partnerships
Rockstar formalized a partnership with NoPixel, the biggest FiveM RP server, in 2025. An unprecedented move from a studio that had historically kept the RP scene at arm's length — read as preparing the ground.
As long as Rockstar stays silent, ROME remains an outside reconstruction. The name "ROME" itself could be wrong. The listed features may be partly, fully, or not at all on Rockstar's roadmap. To watch for: an official Newswire post, a mention in a Take-Two earnings call, or the opening of a creator program before the November 19, 2026 release.
